All roads lead to Easter for Danielle Brooks and her highly anticipated portrayal of Mahalia Jackson in the Gospel trailblazer’s Lifetime biographical film.
Presented by award-winning journalist and news anchor Robin Roberts, the made-for-TV movie is set to chronicle Jackson’s humble beginnings in the Jim Crow South to her historic rise to fame – a barrier-breaking journey that saw her publicly wage war for civil rights and equality alongside the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King while privately battling her own personal woes.
Just a month after Roberts took to ‘Good Morning America’ to give viewers their “first look” at the film (as we reported here), its official trailer has finally arrived.

‘Mahalia’ – which premieres April 3 – comes as the first in a string of unrelated biopics set to ode the life and times of the “Mother of Gospel Music.”
GRAMMY winner Jill Scott will assume the iconic character for the first ever big screen adaptation of her life story (produced by Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx and Academy Award nominee Queen Latifah), while 13-time GRAMMY nominee Ledisi will portray the Gospel icon in the forthcoming film, ‘Remember Me.’

This looks amazing. Danielle is embodying Mahalia from what I’ve seen and heard in the trailer. Fantasia would have killed it but she fumbled her bag with personal drama.
I’m sorry Danielle ate this the f*** up. She has that Mahalia southern baptist twang and everything in those vocals! WOW. This preview got me excited! I think they should do a Bebe & Cece Winans movie next! Feel free to steal my idea Lifetime.
I’m here for this but I’m not here for her playing Mahalia..she doesn’t look like her and damn sure doesn’t sound like her. I also think they should have used Mahalia’s REAL voice bc IMO it’s impartive for it to be heard and besides her voice can NOT be duplicated and they definently should have gotten a REAL gospel singer to play her preferably Yolanda Adams. Mahalia was STRICTLY about the Lord, NOTHING else mattered to her. I also think about her all the time even though she was before my time. I love her. I’m not putting my all into this movie but I AM going to watch..that’s just that

How you gonna say Danielle sounds nothing like Mahalia, but in the same breath say Yolanda Adams should play her? Yolanda looks and sounds nothing like Mahalia. At least Danielle is an actual ACTRESS who looks and sounds SIMILAR. Wait for the movie drops to cast judgment.
